Butt plugs: your guide

Butt plugs are one of those things that people find easy to joke about, but if you’ve not used one before it isn’t always easy to know where to start. FPA Pleasure is here to help if you want to add some anal play to your sex life.

What is a butt plug?

A butt plug is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a sex toy that’s designed to be placed, and stay, in your anus.

It's a bit like a dildo, except most butt plugs are shorter and usually have a flared base.

There are loads of different styles and types. Some are simply meant to sit in place, others vibrate. The Rocks Off Butt Throb Anal Vibrator, for example, has seven different settings that you can try to see which might give you most pleasure.

The larger base is so that when the muscles of the rectum contract (which is part of the pleasure), the butt plug isn’t pulled in and stuck (which is not).

Butt plugs made of materials like rubber or silicone can be good, as they’re firm enough to easily penetrate your anus but soft enough they won’t do any harm to the delicate anal canal.

If an accident does happen and the butt plug does get stuck, don't panic, but do go to your local emergency department (A&E) so that trained medical staff can remove it for you. This might seem embarrassing but remember that the staff are used to dealing with such situations in a sensitive manner and it's important that the butt plug is removed safely as soon as possible in order to prevent infection or other problems.

When (and why) would I use one?

There’s no right or wrong time to use a butt plug. Some people use them when they’re alone, as part of foreplay (they can help prepare the anus for sex), and some use a plug during sex to enhance orgasm.

A common misconception is that butt plugs are sex toys for men – but there’s no reason why anyone can’t or shouldn’t enjoy them. Butt plugs are primarily to stimulate one of the most concentrated areas of nerve endings in your body.

For women, a plug can create pressure on the back of the vagina, leading to more intense stimulation during vaginal penetration. For men, plugs can stimulate the prostate, which can cause some pretty incredible orgasms.

How to use a butt plug for the first time

You can use a butt plug in whatever setting you feel comfortable in but it can be a good idea to try using one alone the first time, to see if it’s right for you.

Start small

Get a small plug to begin with. You can work your way up to larger ones, but starting off small will help with comfort.

Consider a condom

Putting a condom over your plug before you use it can help it to slide in smoothly. It also helps keep your toy clean and free from bacteria and makes washing it afterwards an easier job.

Lube up

You should use plenty of lube, every time. Water-based lubes are your best bet, as other types of lube may not play nicely with the material the plug is made from – for example silicone lube can react badly with silicone toys.

Lubricate your finger and anus first, running your finger around the outside of the anus first to relax the anus and then put your lubed finger bit by bit slowly inside the anus. When you have got used to that sensation, lubricate the butt plug and very slowly insert it, stopping regularly to get used to the new sensations, gradually inserting the whole butt plug a bit at a time if that is what you want to do.

Find the right position for you

Positions that tend to work best if you haven't used a butt plug before are positions where the knees are drawn towards the chest, for example being bent over on all fours or squatting over the butt plug and inserting it that way.

If you would like to insert the butt plug while lying down, then being on your back with your knees drawn up to your chest should also work well.

But whatever position you decide, going slowly at first is the key to a pleasurable experience.

Go slowly

You may feel some discomfort and a stretching sensation until the butt plug is fully inserted, but if you begin to feel pain, then stop.

Only go as far as you want

If you can’t or don’t want to insert the whole plug your first time, don’t worry: that’s perfectly normal and you can stop any time you want to.

And remember, anal play should be fun and pleasurable so if you’re not enjoying it then maybe it’s just not for you.

If you’re ready to give it a try then butt plugs like the Butt Quiver Anal Vibrator are perfect for beginners.
